Hi mama! Keeping our little ones safe is the number one job, and now that includes thinking about what's in the stuff we put on (and around) them every day. "Natural," "clean," "non-toxic"... it's hard to tell which labels mean anything.

If you only change a few things, start with what touches your baby's skin every day: wipes, diaper cream, baby wash, and laundry detergent. That's where this list starts. After that it moves through the nursery, feeding, bath time, clothes, and toys. Where independent safety ratings exist, I checked the picks against the Environmental Working Group (EWG), so you can shop with a little more confidence.

What Does "Non-Toxic" Mean? Ingredients to Avoid in Baby Products

"Non-toxic" isn't a regulated term. So it helps to know which ingredients people are usually trying to avoid:

  • Phthalates: Often found in soft plastics and synthetic fragrance. Some can disrupt hormones.

  • BPA (Bisphenol A): Used in some hard plastics. It's been linked to hormone disruption, which is why so many baby products are BPA-free now.

  • Formaldehyde: Can show up in some pressed-wood furniture, glues, and preservatives, and can irritate airways.

  • Lead: Found in old paint and some imported toys. There's no safe level of lead exposure for kids.

A "free from" label is a good start. A third-party rating or certification (like EWG VERIFIED, Greenguard Gold, or GOTS) is better, because someone other than the brand did the checking. EWG doesn't rate hard goods like cribs, bottles, or toys, so for those, look for certifications like Greenguard Gold or GOTS instead.

How to read EWG ratings: For personal care (Skin Deep), scores run 1 to 10, and 1–2 means low hazard. For cleaning products (including laundry), grades run A (best) to F. EWG VERIFIED is their strictest mark.

For the things EWG doesn't rate: EWG rates personal-care and cleaning products. That covers the wipes, creams, washes, and detergents here, and its EWG VERIFIED mark also covers a few disposable diapers, like Healthybaby and Coterie. It doesn't rate cribs, bedding, paint, bottles, spoons, bibs, clothes, toys, or most diaper brands. For those, I checked other certifications and safety claims on each maker's own site and noted what I found next to each item: GREENGUARD Gold for the crib, GOTS for the crib sheet and onesie, Certified asthma & allergy friendly® and Green Seal for the paint, OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 and FSC-certified pulp for the Honest diapers, and BPA- and phthalate-free materials for the bottle, spoons, bib, and toys. Claims like "BPA-free" come from the maker, not an outside certifier, so those are marked with the brand's name. Nothing EWG grades D or F is on this list.

Non-Toxic Nursery Essentials

The nursery is where your baby sleeps, so it's worth a look, too.

Crib and Mattress

Look for a solid-wood crib and a mattress made without harmful chemicals. Greenguard Gold certification is worth looking for. It means the product meets strict limits on chemical emissions.

  • Example: The DaVinci Kalani 4-in-1 Convertible Crib is a popular solid-wood convertible crib that grows with your child. DaVinci lists it as GREENGUARD Gold Certified (tested for low chemical emissions), with lead- and phthalate-safe finishes and FSC-certified pine.

Bedding

Go for organic cotton or bamboo. It's soft and breathable, and it's grown without synthetic pesticides.

  • Example: The Burt's Bees Baby Organic Crib Sheet is made from organic cotton. Burt's Bees Baby's organic cotton is GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified.

Paint and Decor

If you're painting the nursery, pick a low-VOC or zero-VOC paint (VOCs are volatile organic compounds). Try to paint well before baby arrives so the room has time to air out.

  • Example: Benjamin Moore Eco Spec is the brand's zero-VOC line. (You may still see its older Natura line recommended online, but Natura was discontinued in 2021.) Eco Spec is Certified asthma & allergy friendly® and Green Seal certified, per Benjamin Moore.

Non-Toxic Feeding Essentials

Non-Toxic Baby Bottles (Glass vs. BPA-Free Plastic)

Glass and BPA-free plastic are both good choices. Glass is durable, easy to clean, and doesn't hang onto smells. BPA-free plastic is lighter and won't break when it gets dropped (and it will get dropped).

  • Example: The Lifefactory Glass Baby Bottle is made from borosilicate glass with a protective silicone sleeve. Lifefactory says it's BPA- and phthalate-free and tested to meet FDA standards.

Utensils

Look for stainless steel or food-grade silicone. Both are easy to clean and free of the plastics you're trying to avoid.

  • Example: The OXO Tot Feeding Spoon Set has soft tips that are gentle on little gums, and OXO lists it as BPA-, phthalate-, and PVC-free, with a food-grade silicone coating.

Bibs

Organic cotton bibs are soft and go right in the wash. Silicone or plastic bibs with a pocket just wipe clean.

  • Example: The BabyBjörn Baby Bib is made from soft, BPA- and PVC-free plastic. The built-in pocket catches crumbs, and it rinses clean in seconds. BabyBjörn says its plastics are tested for BPA and other harmful substances and certified food-safe.

Non-Toxic Diapering Essentials

You'll be changing a lot of diapers, and the skin under them is extra sensitive.

Diapers

A newborn goes through a lot of diapers, so this is a good place to go gentle. Look for fragrance-free and lotion-free, with chlorine-free pulp, and an outside certification when you can find one.

  • Clean pick: Honest Clean Conscious Diapers, Newborn: OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified and made with FSC-certified fluff pulp, per Honest. Fragrance-free and bleached without elemental chlorine (ECF, not totally chlorine-free), but not EWG-rated.

  • Everyday pick: Huggies Little Snugglers, Newborn: I really like that they're stretchy, don't leak easily, and are reasonably priced. Huggies says they're dermatologist-tested and made without fragrance, lotion, parabens, phthalates, or latex, with elemental-chlorine-free (ECF) pulp. No EWG rating or third-party certification.

  • Splurge: Healthybaby Diapers, Newborn: EWG VERIFIED, with Nordic Swan Ecolabel, OEKO-TEX Made in Green, and FSC certifications and totally chlorine-free (TCF) pulp, per Healthybaby. A lovely upgrade if it fits your budget.

The Safest Baby Wipes (WaterWipes, Honest, Coterie)

Look for wipes without alcohol or harsh preservatives.

Non-Toxic Diaper Cream: With Zinc and Without

Pick a diaper cream without parabens or synthetic fragrance. Zinc oxide creams form a thick barrier, which is handy when a rash shows up. A zinc-free balm is gentler for every day.

Here's what's worth keeping by the tub.

Non-Toxic Baby Shampoo & Body Wash (One That Smells So Sweet)

Look for a gentle wash without sulfates, parabens, or synthetic fragrance.

All three washes here are scented. A fragrance-free baby wash hasn't been checked for this list yet.

Bath Toys

Go for natural rubber or BPA-free plastic, and skip anything with phthalates or lead. Toys with no holes (or ones that come apart) are easier to keep mold-free.

  • Example: The Green Toys Bath Boat is made from 100% recycled plastic. Green Toys says it's BPA-, phthalate-, and PVC-free and meets FDA food-contact standards.

Towels

A soft cotton hooded towel is all you need. If organic matters to you, look for GOTS certification on the label. "Organic" in the product name alone doesn't tell you much.

  • Tip: Check the material tag. Some popular "luxe" baby towels are cotton blended with polyester trim, or fully polyester microfiber.

Fabrics

Organic cotton and bamboo are soft, breathable, and easy on sensitive skin.

  • Example: The Finn + Emma Organic Cotton Onesie is made from 100% organic cotton with non-toxic dyes, and Finn + Emma says its cotton is GOTS certified.

Non-Toxic Baby Laundry Detergent (Do Babies Need a Special One?)

Use a detergent without dyes or harsh chemicals. Fun fact: Wirecutter's testing found you don't actually need a "baby" detergent. A good gentle one works for the whole family.

Non-Toxic Toys

Materials

Choose toys made from natural wood, organic cotton, or non-toxic plastic. Skip anything with small parts that could be a choking hazard.

  • Example: Hape wooden toys are made from sustainably sourced wood. Hape says its toys are independently tested to ASTM safety standards, finished with water-based paints, and free of BPA and phthalates.

Certifications

Look for safety certifications like ASTM F963 (US) or EN71 (Europe). Either one means a toy meets safety standards.

  • Example: Green Toys Stacking Cups are made from 100% recycled plastic, and Green Toys says they're free of BPA, phthalates, and PVC and meet FDA food-contact standards.

Do babies need special laundry detergent?

Usually not. Wirecutter's testing found a baby-specific detergent isn't necessary, and a gentle, fragrance-free detergent works for the whole family. If your baby has eczema or very sensitive skin, ask your pediatrician what they recommend.

Do you need to wash baby clothes before use?

It's widely recommended to wash new baby clothes, sheets, and blankets before the first use. That gets rid of dust, leftover manufacturing finishes, and whatever they picked up in the store or warehouse. One gentle wash with your regular baby-safe detergent is enough.
